A theme sets the ceiling on how a site can look and perform, so it’s worth more scrutiny than the first attractive preview screenshot.
What to check before picking one
- Responsive design that actually works, not just a marketing claim: test it on a real phone.
- Update frequency and reviews: an actively maintained theme is safer for security and compatibility.
- Page-load speed with the theme’s demo content loaded, not a stripped-down benchmark.
- Whether it supports a child theme, so customizations survive future theme updates.
Theme checklist
Free vs. premium
Free themes cost nothing but often come with limited customization options and support. Premium themes cost money but typically include more design flexibility, dedicated support, and more frequent updates, worth it once the site is generating real business.
Don’t over-customize a theme you’ll outgrow
Heavy customization on top of a generic theme often becomes technical debt once the business needs something the theme wasn’t built for. If you already know the site needs custom functionality, it’s usually cheaper in the long run to start with a simpler theme and build precisely what’s needed, rather than fighting a feature-heavy theme into shape.
